Boxing Ring, as the name suggests, is a place surrounded by boundaries within which a boxing match takes place. The conventional day boxing ring is created on an elevated platform, usually the structure of a square having a post on every corner of the 4 parallel ropes that get connected with the help of a turnbuckle. In contrast to the wrestling ring ropes, the boxing rings typically get secured in the mid points. Numerous professional boxing organizations vary in their construction of boxing ring. However, in case a standard ring falls somewhere around 16 to 25 ft in between ropes, an additional 2 ft is formed outside the ropes boundary. The ring is placed on a platform which normally measure 3-4 ft measuring from the ground adjoining the posts which are raised to a height of nearly five feet. One inch padding is provided to the ring wrapped up by extended canvas. The diameter of the boxing ring ropes is nearly 1 inch which withholds the post that rises to five feet. The rope holds the posts at 54, 42, 30 and 18 inches height.
About the term Ring:
Boxing ring is essentially a ring which is bordered with ropes. The origin of the term can be traced back to archiac times during which competitions were held on grounds by drawing arbitrary circles. Jack Broughton rules that were written during 1743 continued using the term “ring” and defined it as the center of the circle in which the boxer met for a fight at beginning of every round. Boxing ring is also sarcastically referred to as the square circle due to its formation which is essentially square in nature and is attached by ropes.
