The History of Golden Glove tournament has its origins in the year 1927 when Paul Gallico, a sports editor by profession working in New York Daily News channeled a boxing challenge for the amateurs. The name Golden Gloves was the brainchild of Capt. Joseph. But, the history is still a bit skeptic, since the boxing magazine, “The Ring” declared Chicago Tribune as the initiators of the tournament during 1926 which was later followed by Gallico in 1927. After witnessing several cases of injuries, Golden Gloves ruled out mismatches class. This led to the creation of a class named as “sub-novice”. In this class, the beginners competed against the beginners. Simultaneously, it introduced entire physical checkups of the amateurs as a crucial event which was ignored by the Amateur Athletic Union.
